It's Michelle again!
My goal while I am here is to update this blog at least once a week and post the new stuff I learn and get to do!
While I was in school I had one class (PR Strategies) that I believed was one of the few classes in my whole college career that would help me in the "real world." I couldn't be more grateful for that class right now. We worked on marketing and PR campaigns, which is pretty much exactly what I'm doing here at Marking Strategies, Inc.
Last week I started working with Sarah on the Myrtle Beach Dining group. More specifically, a campaign to pitch to the Japanese Steakhouse Kono. I did a lot of research on Kono's competition and how to help promote their new $5 lunch special. Now I am working on ways for them to better improve their social media activity.
Last week I also began working on AdQuiv which is a way for us to keep track of how much press and advertising a client gets on the internet, papers, and television and through a formula give them a dollar amount of how much that exposure is worth.
I'm still learning so much and still loving what I am doing. I will make sure to keep you posted!
Until next time,
Michelle :)

New Intern Michelle
Hi Everyone!
My name is Michelle and I am a new intern here at Marketing Strategies, Inc. I started a few weeks ago then took some time off to get married up at Ocean Isle Beach, NC. But I'm back and so excited to continue working and learning!
I am originally from Charlotte NC, but I graduated in May from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Communication with a concentration in Public Relations as well as a minor in Business Administration. I moved to Myrtle Beach with my husband who just got out of the Marine Corps so he could attend school at Coastal Carolina University to become a high school history teacher.
After searching for jobs in the Public Relations and Marketing fields I quickly discovered that to most employers, simply having a degree is just not enough, the experience means so much more. So after being fed up with the online job searches and applications I decided to go about it the old fashion way. I looked up PR Firms in the Myrtle Beach area, printed out some resumes, dressed my best, and drove around town determined to find something! After being shot down a few times (some places wouldn't even open their doors to me!) I stopped here at Marketing Strategies Inc., and it was such a breath of fresh air compared to the places I had been earlier that day. Denise was kind enough to take time out of her day to talk to me and to look at my resume. She offered me an internship and I didn't hesitate to jump at the opportunity! I love it here! Everyone I have come into contact with are all very friendly and helpful. I am also already learning a lot. So far I have mastered Constant Contact list, finally finished organizing our Stockphotos, and today was able to work on a few press releases, one for The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach for their annual Paws Across the Water Duck Race.
I cannot wait to see what the future holds for me here at Marketing Strategies Inc. and to learn more about all of the work that goes into everything we do here!
I'll keep you all posted on my experiences!
Until next time,
Michelle :)

Why Intern?
The other Sarah at Marketing Strategies found this article that we thought would be interesting to address on the intern blog: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/08/14/sunday/main20092149.shtml?tag=contentMain;contentBody.
The article, titled "Internships: A foot in the door" explores the pros and cons of internships and their recent popularity. The interns they interviewed did not have a problem with working for free, and saw their internships as opportunities to gain valuable work experience, and maybe even a job.
Others, like Ross Eisenbry of the Economic Policy institute, disagree. Eisenbry fears that internships take away paying jobs from those who need them, and that most of the people who can afford to pay rent and still work for free are kids from the upper-middle class. His point was, if businesses can hire someone to work full time, and in some cases, longer than full time, why would they want to pay someone else?
Although Eisenbry has a good point, I believe most businesses aren't hiring now because they simply don't have the money. But if someone comes along and wants to work for free, they're not likely to turn them down.
I am a big proponent of internships. My high school had a great internship program; instead of going to classes on Wednesdays, we would go to internships. I interned on Capitol Hill my junior year, and graduated high school with a better resume than a lot of college students. I continued interning in college because I knew I would gain valuable work experience and would discover what I did, or definitely did not, want to pursue as a career. For instance, I caught the political bug on Capitol Hill, but learned I do not want to be a lawyer when I interned for the local Solicitor.
In today's economy, internships are many people's only options. I stumbled upon the Marketing Strategies internship while I was searching for a full time job. My problem was that I had no idea what kind of job I was working for, so I decided to give Marketing Strategies a shot. As it turns out, I now know that I want to pursue a career in public relations or communications, and I have a new direction in my job search. When it comes down to it, potential employers care more about solid work experience than a job title or salary. I have learned a lot from the internship, have gained a new skill set for my resume, and am very grateful for the opportunity!

Checking In
It's been far too long since my last post! I have been busy writing press releases, researching potential new clients, and helping compile a large mailing list (almost 500 people!) for a client's campaign. Things like mailing lists tend to be the less glamorous side of marketing and public relations, but still remain crucial elements for any campaign. If the mailing addresses aren't correct, the rest of the campaign becomes ineffective and a waste of time and money!
Karen mentioned helping with a tag-line for a campaign. The client, who is one of our pro-bono clients, loved it! We held a press conference for them to announce a new environmental friendly project, and we had a fantastic turnout. We generated more than $16,000 of FREE media coverage with just ONE press conference!
Just a quick note on how we calculate that $16,000 worth of coverage. One of my tasks that needs to be done about once a week, is something we call AdQuiv. As a free service to our clients, we monitor media coverage by measuring (in inches) any coverage that our clients get, online or in print, and multiply that by a certain rate. The rates vary based on the publication or the size of the online article. We also have a way of measuring the value of TV coverage, with a rate per minute.
That's my update for now, a little long again! I leave today for a short vacation and return on Monday to wrap up my last couple of weeks as an intern. The summer has flown by!

These past two weeks have really flown by! I have been working on research, and components of ad campaigns for several clients. This internship continues to be a really good experience.
Last week I was given the opportunity to assist in developing a tag line for a new ad. I was able to look at samples, to inspire my creativity, and create ideas of my own.
I hope everyone has been enjoying this great weather!!!
Until next time,
Karen

As promised I am back for the summer :)
Throughout the summer you will be hearing from myself and the other intern, Sarah.
To fill you all in, after graduation I took a three-week trip to Europe with my twin sister. While in Europe we traveled to London, Paris, Munich, Florence, Pisa, Venice and Rome.
It's hard for me to find the words to explain how AMAZING it was. A life changing experience, and something I feel so lucky and blessed to have had the chance to do.
As I did during the spring, I will update this blog on a regular basis and attempt to give you some insight into an internship with Marketing Strategies, Inc.

New Intern
I started last week as the new intern at Marketing Strategies Inc. I was lucky to meet Denise at a rotary lunch that I almost didn't go to, and a week later I was working here. I love what I'm doing so far and this insight into the world of public relations will hopefully help me decide if this career path is for me.
In my first week, I drafted press releases and educational articles for clients and sorted pictures for one of our campaigns. The first project I had was for one of our pro bono clients, the North Myrtle Beach Humane Society. They are hosting their second annual Whiskers, Wags, & Wine Fundraiser on June 6th from 6:00pm-9:00pm. It looks like a great event and I encourage everyone to check it out: http://www.humanesocietynmb.org/.
My educational articles have been on skin cancer and hurricane readiness, both very relevant topics as summer quickly approaches!
A few quick facts about me: Born in raised in South Carolina, I graduated from Santa Clara University last year (March 2010) with a degree in Political Science and a minor in International Studies. My first job out of college was working as a regional field director for one of the most competitive US Congressional Races of the 2010 election cycle.
I am very grateful for Marketing, Strategies, Inc. for giving me this wonderful opportunity. I look forward to a fun-filled and rewarding summer!

I hope everyone's had a chance to enjoy this beautiful weather. It’s supposed to continue through this weekend..mid/upper 70's with little chance for rain :)
As the weather gets warmer and the class work is piling up its a constant reminder that I will soon be graduating.
I'm saddened by the idea that this internship is coming to an end. Luckily, I will be back to take a summer class and will have the opportunity to intern here during that month.
However, if anyone is interested in an internship with Marketing Strategies, Inc. please let me know.
This is not only a great place to learn, but also allows you to gain valuable experience. I urge everyone that is interested to please apply!

Have you ever looked at a photo and thought it is perfect for that ad? I have! However, I never knew how a company or organization was able to find that photo.
Did they Google it? Did they hire a photographer?
Well...I learned this week that there are websites that supply photos (for a cost depending on the picture and size).
For this assignment I was looking for photos of athletes swimming, fishing, playing golf and playing tennis. I was amazed at the quality of the photos!
To give you an idea of how many photos they have..in the category for fishing there was 617 pages of photos.
I love learning new things :)

I've been working on drafting two articles for the Coastal Carolina Breast Center. While researching information to write the article I was saddened by the number of people that are affected by cancer each year.
I hope I don't bore you with statistics but it helps to understand the full impact of this disease. In 2010 it was estimated that there were 23,240 new cases of cancer in South Carolina and 1,529,560 new cases in the U.S.
The 2011 American Cancer Society Relay For Life at Coastal Carolina University campus will be held Friday, April 8th at the CCU Track. This is an opportunity to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.
There are currently 745 participants and $65,376.68 has been raised. Come out and support a great cause!

We have created a survey to help provide important information when re-designing the Katies Project website.
We would like to ask everyone to please take the survey. The more feedback we get the better we can understand what changes need to be made.
If you go to: http://katiesproject.org/ and click around the site a survey will pop up. It should only take you a few minutes.
We appreciate any feedback you can give us.
Everyone enjoy their spring break and be safe :)

Coastal Carolina University graduation is 2 MONTHS from yesterday!! Yikess that's scary!
It is crucial when applying and interviewing for jobs to make a lasting impression. A project was assigned to me last week that gave me a great idea for marketing yourself.
I was asked to research information on QR's, and for those of you who don't know what that is they are quick response codes. You can scan them with your smartphone (which practically everyone has now-a-days) and they will pull up a URL.
This technology allows you to make a QR code linking to your resume or any other site and put it on your business card.
The research suggests that it is a great tool to market yourself and makes a great and lasting impression on people.
I wish you all the best of luck in your job searches!

Coastal Carolina put on a presentation last week about social media sites and their importance when branding yourself.
Yupp facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, foursquare..we all have them!
They have become a part of our every day lives, but more importantly they are now being used as a tool for networking and even getting a JOB :)
The speaker stressed the importance of creating a good image for yourself. He provided examples of how individuals he has worked with have been fired for information they have posted on there social media sites.
One thing that I found interesting was that lawyers are now using social media sites during jury duty selection to find out more information about the individuals.
He couldn't stress enough BE SMART with your choices because once things are on the internet you can delete them but they are never really gone!
Yours Truly,
Karen

This has been a very busy and productive week!
Marketing Strategies, Inc. is responsible for designing the program for the 2011 Carolinas All-Star Basketball Classic. This tournament features the best players from North Carolina vs. the best players from South Carolina.
I have been working to gather the information for the player profiles in the program. This entails inputting the information that they have sent us and contacting coach's for missing information. I look forward to continuing my work on this project.
Until next time,

Good afternoon everyone,
I have been busy today continuing my work on the media files. I finished organizing and compiling all the information. As I went through I labeled the publications so I would know which were current and which needed to be updated. Those that are not current need the 2011 media kit and rate card. This can be found on most websites, however if they are not available I send a email request for it.
I LOVE the work I get to do here :)
Yours Truly,
Karen

Hello again,
This week has flown by! I've continued working on updating the media files, there almost completely organized! Yayy :)
I believe it is very important during an internship to understand why your doing what your doing. Here at Marketing Strategies, Inc. they take the time to explain to me the significance of each assignment. This helps me to understand the purpose of each assignment rather than just doing it.
I hope you all like the new design of the blog! Please feel free to leave any comments or suggestions that you have.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Karen

Hello everyone,
This has been a great week at Marketing Strategies, Inc.!
I was assigned the task of organizing the media list today, which allowed me to get a deeper insight into this profession.
In marketing and public relations keeping a media list is crucial. This includes the current contact information for each publication, its circulation, distribution areas, and advertising rates. It is very important that the list is current!
I look forward to continuing to be apart of the team here at Marketing Strategies, Inc. and learning as much as I can.
Have a great weekend!

I hope everyone’s been having a great week. It’s almost Friday =)
I’ve officially been here for two weeks now, and I'm convinced what I will learn here in one semester is more valuable and tangible than what I could learn in a classroom.
If you are interested in the PRinciples internship position please feel free to ask me any questions you may have regarding the position, responsibilities, or application. I would be more than happy to answer any questions I can, and I would love to hear from you.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Karen

I am very excited today because I'm working in the intern office for the first time this afternoon! It's hard to put into words how nice it is, I feel extremely lucky.
Last week I began searching for grants for Katie's Project, which I am continuing today. For those of you that are unaware of what Katie's Project is, it was inspired by one girls school project and has been kept alive by Kathy Foxworth. The mission of Katie’s Project is to give boys and girls the opportunity to attend milestone events that require formal attire. They provide formal wear at no charge to boys and girls that qualify.
For anyone who is interested in learning more about the organization or donating go to katiesproject.org
I hope you all like the new design for the blog!

I hope everyone had a great holiday and happy New Year!
Let me first introduce myself and tell you how excited and honored I am to be selected as the PRinciples intern for the Spring 2011 semester.
My name is Karen Pavlick and I'm a senior at Coastal Carolina University, majoring in Marketing and Communication. I will be graduating in May and hope to start career in public relations and/or marketing shortly thereafter.
I would like to thank Megan, the PRinciples intern from this fall for all the hard work she dedicated to this program. You are truly missed Megan and we wish you the best of luck with your internship in Florida.
Today is my first day and I've been here for 2 hours and 33 minutes so far and I love every second of it. I honestly believe that there is so much value in doing an internship, and to have the opportunity to do one with Marketing Strategies, Inc. is a blessing.
Throughout this semester I will continue to keep you updated on all of my internship experiences and activities. I look forward to sharing them with everyone.
Until next time,
Karen
Let me first introduce myself and tell you how excited and honored I am to be selected as the PRinciples intern for the Spring 2011 semester.
My name is Karen Pavlick and I'm a senior at Coastal Carolina University, majoring in Marketing and Communication. I will be graduating in May and hope to start career in public relations and/or marketing shortly thereafter.
